Mahonia ‘BBM9’ (JUNGLEWHISPER) is a new evergreen shrub within the Proven Winners® assortment that stands out through its distinctive appearance and high ornamental value across multiple seasons. With its full, compact, bushy growth habit, this Mahonia is suitable for both the consumer market and professional applications, including garden designs, public green spaces, and landscaping projects.
JungleWhisper® has a characteristic appearance with a tropical, jungle-inspired look. The red young shoots provide an attractive colour accent from an early stage. In summer, the numerous purple-red flower buds open into double flowers with vivid orange petals and yellow centres. The abundant, fragrant flowers are not only decorative but also attract many insects.
In addition to its remarkable flowering and striking colour combination, this evergreen Mahonia provides year-round structure in the garden. Its healthy growth and reliable performance, combined with its compact habit, make JungleWhisper® suitable for a wide range of planting applications.
The combination of a unique appearance, fragrant flowers, value for pollinators, and strong performance in various applications makes Mahonia ‘BBM9’ (JUNGLEWHISPER) a valuable addition to the existing Mahonia assortment. The variety was bred by BB Botanics, Mrs A. Bulk-Brylla, and will be commercially available from autumn 2026 through Huisman Boomkwekerij BV. Plant breeders’ rights are currently pending.
