Chitalpa 'NCXC1' (EL NIÑO) – exotic flower power for a changing climate
Chitalpa 'NCXC1' (EL NIÑO) is a promising new addition to the Proven Winners® range. This unique hybrid between Catalpa and Chilopsis combines the best traits of both parents in a climate-resilient plant.
Its fragrant, orchid-like flowers appear in eye-catching purple-toned clusters, blooming abundantly from late spring into summer.
In addition to its ornamental value, EL NIÑO stands out for its toughness. The dark green, lance-shaped foliage remains undamaged even in extreme heat. It also performs well in poor or dry soils, making it highly suitable for modern landscapes where drought and heat resistance are increasingly important.
This hybrid was developed by Dr. T. Ranney at North Carolina State University and will be introduced in Europe by Valkplant BV starting in 2026. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for.
