Agapanthus praecox 'Kek5006' (ZAMBEZI) – a hardy, variegated eye-catcher with lavender-blue flowers
With Agapanthus praecox 'Kek5006' (ZAMBEZI), Formidable Plant Breeders presents a striking new addition to the Agapanthus range. The main strength of this introduction lies in its variegated foliage – a truly distinctive feature compared to other Agapanthus varieties. ZAMBEZI stands out with its two-tone leaves: fresh green with bright yellow highlights. The variegation is stable and does not revert to plain green.
In addition to its decorative foliage, the plant also offers impressive flowering performance. ZAMBEZI produces numerous spherical flower heads in a refined lavender-blue shade – unusually abundant for a variegated Agapanthus, which are typically less floriferous.
Thanks to its compact and uniform growth habit, this evergreen is easy to cultivate and well suited for borders, containers or public plantings. It is a mutant selection bred by Keith Kristen in South Africa and will be commercially available from September 2025 via HORTIVAL DIFFUSION. The plant is not protected by plant breeders’ rights.
ZAMBEZI delivers long-lasting ornamental value and strong garden performance – from spring well into late summer. A bright addition to any garden centre assortment.
